Teenagers! Something to look forward to after all!

I really enjoyed reading about teenagers in all this weeks material! My kids aren't there yet so I liked seeing what I have to look forward to! I was happy to read the section titled "The Myth of Storm and Stress" Whenever someone tells me they have a teenager (or multiple teenagers) I always respond with "Oh so you have your hands full!" I guess I bought into the Hollywood hype about teenagers being difficult and combative towards parents. I can see it being a difficult time for me as a parent though. I like to be very involved in my kids lives. I enjoy helping them pick clothes and taking them to movies or to get ice cream and I LOVE to cuddle. From the sounds of it, all that may stop once they hit adolescence. Whenever the conversation comes up with other parents about the age when the kids move out of the house I am always the one to say that I think I will be broken hearted! I cant imagine a home being any sort of an actual home without the laughter and noise that comes along with my children. I love it! I'm almost always met with the comment "That's why God made teenagers, to prepare the parents heart for them to move out". I understand what is meant by this, that by the time you have gone through a couple years with your teenagers you wont want them around as much and you will be ready for them to spread their wings and leave the nest. I know myself and I know I wont feel that way. No matter how frustrating they may be I just don't see an empty house as something to look forward to. And from the sounds of it, the teenage years wont be so bad! I just need to be prepared for the changes in the kids and be willing to let our relationship change a bit from when they were little and i could curl up with them in bed and snuggle till morning!

  1. I was thinking that same thing while reading the article "Inside the Teen Brain." It's kind of scary to think about dealing with teenagers and sad at the same time because I love the ages my kids are now. All the fun things we do and of course the cuddling like you said. I know how difficult I was as a teen, so I hope karma doesn't catch up me! But preparing for the upcoming changes in the future and now knowing more about how the teen brain works it should be more helpful and hopefully won't be as bad I think.

  2. I am still house bound for now till next spring/summer, my brother is leaving for Arkansas in exactly 23-22 days. Never hope for the ones you love to go away, but never hold them back. Just cherish everyday as long as you have them. A mother saying good by to her son is one of the hardest things I have seem, especially with me going of to find a path or my brother getting married and saying good bye. Great post.

  3. it is difficult to look at and mentally try to prepare for that moment when your kids grow up and move out and find their intimate partner. Shea has said it well, it is a hard thing but never hold them back from what they are trying to do in life.
